HypnoBirthing® is a method that allows you to work with your body’s natural birthing process to have a calmer, easier birth. HypnoBirthing® destroys the myth that severe pain is a necessary and inevitable accompaniment to labor. Using the deep relaxation techniques taught in the Mongan Method of HypnoBirthing®, you will learn to allow the birthing muscles to work in harmony to naturally reduce pain and anxiety during birth. Research has shown that women using Hypnobirthing have shorter average labour times, lower rates of caesarean section, decreased use of pain medication, and increased satisfaction with their birthing partner’s support.
Here are some frequently asked questions about HypnoBirthing® classes:
What is the Mongan Method of HypnoBirthing® and how was it developed?
In 1942, the book Childbirth without Fear, written by English obstetrician Grantly Dick-Read and French obstetrician Michel Odent, was published. The book introduced the idea of using hypnotherapy for childbirth. Marie Mongan, an award-winning hypnotherapist, further developed this concept, creating the famous Mongan Method of HypnoBirthing®. Marie Mongan delivered 4 children in the 50’s and 60’s without the use of labor medication. Two of her birthings were entirely free of anaesthesia, which was unheard of at the time. Trained HypnoBirthing® educators now teaching the Mongan Method in 45 countries around the world, helping thousands of women to have birthings free of severe pain.
Will I be asleep during the labor? Will I remember giving birth?
You will be awake and completely in control during your birth, and will have a normal level of recall. You will be in a state of deep relaxation and focus, much like when you lose yourself in a movie or good book. You will be free from the fear and anxiety that cause a chain reaction of release of stress hormones, muscle constriction, and pain. What role will my birthing partner play?
Your birthing partner will play a very active role by learning how to help you enter a state of deep relaxation. You will learn to respond to your partner’s voice and touch by becoming calmer and more relaxed. Even celebrities have been using HypnoBirthing®. Jessica Alba recently discussed her experience using HypnoBirthing® as being “really Zen.” Here she is talking about her experience giving birth on the Ellen show.
