Have you started having pain in your pubic bone? It might even feel like a groin pull. This pain is known as Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction (SPD) or Pubic Symphysis Dysfunction (PSD). It’s even called pelvic girdle pain or pubic bone pain. It has different names and different symptoms. The pain can be dull or sharp, constant or sporadic, occur when sitting, walking or even just moving. The pain can be felt in the front of the pelvis or off to the side, mimicking a groin pull. It usually starts during pregnancy but sometimes it can continue even after you have your baby. Unfortunately, your OB probably won’t have any real solutions for you. This post will give you some insight into this condition as well as some real solutions to help.
Why Pressure And Pubic Pain In Pregnancy?
It’s mostly due to a hormone called relaxin. This hormone loosens your ligaments opening up your pelvis enough in order to have your baby. The pubic bone and pubic symphysis ligament are located at the front of your pelvis. If the hormone makes that ligament get too loose, it causes an imbalance, which results in quite a lot of pain. The increasing weight of your baby puts more pressure on your pelvis, including your pubic bone, causing the pain to get worse. If you’re pregnant, there’s a 25% chance that you’ll have SPD. The risk increases if you’re carrying multiple babies.
If your pelvis is imbalanced, it can also decrease the amount of space your baby has to move around. This can prevent him/her from getting into the right and best position for birth, reducing your chances of having a natural birth.
After you’ve had your baby, relaxin decreases in your body and your ligaments tighten up again. However, the ligaments may not tighten up equally leading to continued pain even after you have your little one.
There are a couple of things you can do on your own that will help you deal with SPD.
- Apply heat to your pubic bone for about 15 minutes at a time. Apply the heat to your pubic bone, even if your pain feels like it’s off to the side. Please take care not to apply any heat to your belly.
- Wear a pregnancy belt. The belt will help support your belly and baby taking some pressure off your pubic bone.
- Avoid sitting in frog position (sitting cross legged on the floor) or doing lunge stretches. Some yoga positions will also increase your pain. Keep your knees together when getting in or out of a car or bed to minimize discomfort (pretend you’re wearing a skirt).
In many cases, these suggestions listed above will be enough to decrease or manage your pain. If you find your pain staying the same or getting worse, you need to see a chiropractor who’s specially trained to help with this problem. Chiropractic adjustments for SPD are very different from ‘regular’ adjustments. They are very gentle and use only light amount of pressure. The number of treatments needed depends on your particular case.
Resolving this issue will allow you to have a much more enjoyable pregnancy and increase your chances of having a natural birth.
