Interview with Kelly
Who are you and what do you do?
I am a mother, a birth and postpartum doula, breastfeeding educator, placenta encapsulator, holistic nutritionist living in Toronto. The last 15 years I have dedicated to educating myself on how to help new families the best I can. I understand how difficult the transition can be into parenthood or growing your family to include more children. I have experience with all types of birth choices such as homebirth, VBAC, cesarean birth, hospital birth, water birth, and twin birth.
What training do you have?
I have trained with DONA and CBI for birth and DONA for postpartum doula support, also CAPPA trained for breastfeeding support. Additional to doula training I am a Registered Holistic Nutritionist and studied at the Canadian School of Natural Nutrition, Hypnobirthing Instructor, placenta encapsulator, and holistic chef.
What do you offer during labour that a partner cannot?
Practical experience! I have attended over 110 births! Up to date statistics, birth and newborn information, highly trained in birth and babies, having that support person that can guide you through tricky situations and negotiations. I’ve got both your backs, partners can feel overwhelmed and anxious; you will have a sigh of relief when I walk through your door on the big day.
How many births have you attended?
I have been working with families since 2004. I offer many services such as holistic nutrition and placenta encapsulation. I have been a birth and postpartum doula for 10 glorious years.
Do you only take on clients who are planning a natural/home birth?
I take on clients no matter what they have planned for their birth experience. I have no judgments my wish is for you to feel empowered, supported, heard and happy. This is an experience you will remember for the rest of your life so my hope is to make it a positive, empowering one.
What happens if you have multiple clients go into labour at the same time?
In case of emergency and life happens I always have an experienced doula available for backup you can read more about my doula team.
What challenged you or surprised you most during the birth of your daughter?
As a single parent it was tough not having a partner at my birth however my doulas (I had two) they were my rocks I couldn’t have done it without them. They offered nonjudgmental, physical, emotional and mental support it made all the difference with my birth journey. My mother also attended and made me feel safe sometimes you need your mommy ☺
Did you eat the placenta? Why?
Absolutely! I needed all the energy I could get! Plus the iron (I was anemic and it helps to increase iron levels). I was also a very likely candidate for postpartum depression because of being a single mother and very stressed out about parenting alone. My placenta pills made transitioning into parenthood so much easier, I gained energy, my iron levels improved dramatically, I didn’t experience any depression and had a plentiful milk supply.
What is your favourite gift to give an expecting/new mom?
Postpartum doula services! That way you get a wonderful combination of my breastfeeding support, yummy healthy food preparation and you can feel human again, you are able to take a shower, eat and nap these simple necessities are often difficult with a new baby.
How do you manage parenting with an unpredictable work schedule?
I’m lucky I have a wonderful support team of doulas that support me, plus my mom! I don’t know what I would do without her, she has been such an incredible support to me since Ella was born I couldn’t do my job without her, she is my rock.
